この詩はトールキンのオリジナルではなく、The Seafarer という古英語で書かれた詩を訳したということだが、後年のトールキン作品にも繰り返し登場する旅への憧憬モチーフの原型があるようで興味深い。
No mind have I for harp 以下のくだりなど、鴎の声を聞いた後のレゴラス、灰色港に向かうビルボやフロドの心境のようだ。
