“many a year” vs. “many years”

エルロンドの会議の中のガンダルフの台詞。

It was Radagast the Brown, who at one time dwelt at Rhosgobel, near the borders of Mirkwood.
He is one of my order, but I had not seen him for many a year.

この for many a year に引っかかった。なぜ、many years でなく many a year ？

誰かが同じ質問してるんですが、この人の引用元はホビットの冒険だった。どうやらトールキンの好きな言い回しのようで。
